Preparing a whole thawed chicken for oven ?
« on: July 01, 2020, 11:06 »
How do I do this for this afternoon, it is thawed and still sitting in its tray with the wrapping around.
Do I tip the blood away and wash, or ....?         I found it lurking in the freezer, but seldom eat meat, so I am not sure         Thanks,  Mrs Bouquet

The health advice is never to wash chicken in your kitchen as you could spread any infection that it contains.

Good cooking will kill any potential germs.

Remove it carefully from its wrapper into your roasting tray.  Dispose of wrapper immediately, wash hands and work surfaces down.

thanks for advice, that is what I did.    When in the Enamel Dish with lid, I lightly coated with olive oil, peper/salt, some ground garlic and mixed herbs.     After cooking I let it stand for about 40 minutes, then had Aunt Bessie, Roasties, mixed veg and gravy.  Just got to think what to do with it for about the next 3 days  :D
Thanks again,  Mrs B

I do love a risotto  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I strip the carcass down & freeze it in 1 person portions then make stock with the carcass & freeze that down too or make soup.  I then use it in a pie, hotpot, crumble or as others have suggested.

I agree with Snowy, this is exactly what I do.  I don't eat meat, but my husband does, and I cook it for him. A whole chicken gives him plenty for two dinners (I plate up an extra one and put it in the fridge for the following day), and then I take off all remaining meat and use it to make curries, chicken and ham pies, risottos,  chicken empanadas etc.
