creotrete wood treatment advice please.
« on: August 26, 2013, 13:29 »
Simple question.
Does anyone use this or can I use this product on a chicken house and run? I don't think it is like the old fasioned creasote. it is also very stong smelling. If so how long would you leave it to dry before birds get in contact with it? I am about to build a new run and need to treat the timber.
regards Mark

There is a data sheet for Creotreat HERE, I would read through it if it is the same product and then make your own judgement.   :)

I used it once on a spare shed that was just there to give additional shelter to my hens during the daytime if it rained and occasionally one would lay in there - I used to throw the eggs because they seemed to taste of the creosote - and this was the "safe" stuff. It took months for the smell to leach out of the wood. Never again.

Was that with just coating the outside of the shed?

Yes, it was disgusting. Did wonders to preserve the wood, but I think if you intend to put hens in, paint it on at least a month in advance.
