First taste of freedom + picture
« on: June 02, 2010, 20:43 »
How exciting, the hens had their first taste of freedom this evening.  We decided to let them out of the run for a little while to see what happened.  Our Light Sussex didn't pluck up enough courage to venture forth but stayed in the gateway watching.  The rest enjoyed it so much I never thought they would come back in.  Corn is a wonderful bribe :D

Hi Hawkins, The Buff Sussex and the Buff Rock are really lovely looking birds and they both have great characters.  I live in Northern Ireland and got them from a local breeder - a bit far for you.  The markings/colourings on the Buff Sussex are very pretty and I would definately get more at a later stage.

Already started to :)  I will have to try and put a net up around an area as I was worried they might wander too far.

They will laugh in the face of any net. I put up a five foot fence to make a run for them.  I've already had to take (knock) three of the top and betty arrived up at the back door to lay her second egg yesterday (we thought she was sick and put her into isolation and she laid her first egg in the garage)

Chickens dont actually look to escape...they love being close to home, and will always be home for supper/bed. The occasional girlie may prefer to roost in a tree, but generally, if they are used to sleeping in their coop, they will put themselves to bed safely, dont worry.
