i bought some from a qd store and planted a few seeds....
first to grow was dam fungi , loads of them.
can anyone recommend a good seed and potting compost please

What a disappointment!
People have often found Verve compost (B&Q?) OK, I think.

Jack's Magic (but it is peat based I'm afraid).
Garden centres stock it but I saw it at B&Q the other day too. It's a bit more pricey than the high street brands but I've decided it's worth the extra. £5.95 for 50L I think.
I use Wickes multipurpose for seeds I'm not so fussed about or for filling big containers once the plant is well established.

we use clover a peat based compost for all our seeding like all compost's we put it through a sieve to eradicate the lumps having tried several brands we found clover to be the best for us and 3 bags for £13 quid is not bad value

The last couple of years I've bought a bag of JI seed compost and cut it with about 50% vermiculite just for starting smaller seeds off tom/peppers etc in cells and I have to say it's made a huge improvement to germination rates on MP stuff from the diy sheds.

Hehe! I definitely got the Wickes recommendation from you and the Jack's magic was from someone else on here and it's what our local garden centre use for all their sowing so figured I couldn't go too wrong with that.

Just because no one else is saying it, please please try to avoid peat based composts. There are some half decent ones out there. If you can get by without it, then please do. So important for our peat bog habitat, and carbon storage.
Last year I used new horizons and it was great, even for seeds. This year managed to get hold of sylvagrow, which looks amazing so far.

Trialing Wickes Compost at the moment, An open fibrous structure, it's good so far but needs to be sieved for seed sowing. Almost all used up, I am going to try Asdas next.
Does anyone know who makes these various store named composts.
I believe Verve (B+Q) is made by Westland.

Had good results using a mix of coco coir block with sieved seed/MP compost (2:1 ratio).

Buy mine from the allotment society shop, it's peat free. Bought some nice seed/potting compost in ASDA the other week. I like jack's magic but allotment shop now putting a premium on anything with peat to wean us off.
