can i just add folks , if you join the RHS  you can get seeds of old varieties and grow them on your plot you send a portion of the  resultant crop back to the RHS  to maintain the seed bank .and i can vouch for it it is a good thing to do and you get to grow some pretty wierd food stuffs

Re pea supports.
Thing with sowing them now is the wind rather than the cold - they snap off. So shelter them.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

along a similar line, what is the best method for germinating and then growing peas without them being eaten?
i've tried putting them straight into the ground but they never emerge, and when i have sown in the greenhouse and transplanted, they do germinate but then are eaten to the ground within five mins.
if by any chance the odd plant does survive, they never really seem to produce very much. also, when is the best time to sow peas? does anyone rate the sowing into a bit of guttering idea?
help!
i have fantastic memories of shelling buckets and buckets of peas as a kid and want my kids to have the same pleasure.
