Hi guys,
I have an allotment and would like to put some flowers in that will keep coming back each year and don't need much looking after.

I'm new to gardening generally and have just completed my 1st year on the plot.  Most of my time is taken up with the veg so it would be nice to put something in that doesn't need too much attention. (If that's possible!)

Any ideas please, whether it be planting bulbs or setting seeds?

I planted some nasturtians and cornflower seeds this year in one little area but they are slow coming through,

Cheers

There are quite a lot of threads here about this subject so plenty of ideas here. Just have a browse at the topics on offer and you'll find plenty of suggestions  :)

The word you need to look up is perenial, (keep coming back year after year). can be grown from seed but may take a while to get to 'a good size'.

Flowers that grow and flower, set seed then die are called annuals,  flowers that grow one year and flower the next are biennials.

Test your soil to find out how acidic or alcaline (measured as a pH) so you're not trying to grow flowers that do not suit your type of soil.

Hope this helps.    Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Flowers that grow and flower, set seed then die are called annuals,  flowers that grow one year and flower the next are biennials.

And those that you sow this year to harvest last year are reannuals.

.. I'll get my coat (and pointy hat)..

I have a flower bed in the middle of my plot to encourage the pollinators.
I bought a perennial plant pack from a certain company I've had many problems with and needless to say half of them either died or didn't come back again!
I have some canterbury bells, verbena and something else very pretty that I can't remember the name of!
I then added cuttings or plantlets from perennials from my garden like aquilegia and sedum and then i throw a few annual seeds in for good measure.
