Non tangle flag pole
« on: November 29, 2012, 20:57 »
I'm asking this for my OH.  ::)

Does anyone have any tips /ideas/ suggestions for making a non tangle/ swivel, rise and lower on a rope, flag pole. He intends to use a scaffold pole, its the swivel bits that hes mumbling about to himself all the time

I know, ::) but it keeps him off the streets :D

Do you mean the sheave block (or pulley) at the top?

The modern idea is to have the rope going up the inside of the staff, emerging through a pulley to an englefield clip to which is clipped the 'flag' and a ring of heavy material encircling the staff is clipped to the lower corner of the flag.  It is this weight that brings the flag down when required.

The idea is that it is 'tamper proof'.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Just remembered,

I lowered the flagpole, rubbed it down, re-painted and replaced the rope on the flagpole and re-erected it on top of the Garrison Library in Gibraltar in preparation for the visit of Charles and Diana after their wedding.  I also hoisted the 'flag'.

Cheers,     Tony.

How lovely, what a nice memory  :)

OH says he is going to use pulleys and had thought about putting the rope inside the tube. The bits he is mulling over are the swivel points above and below the flag. He wants that section to turn in the wind to stop the flag getting wrapped round the pole. Hes thought of using ball bearings but hopes there is something simpler. :)

Hope you understand what i'm on about :)

That looks brilliant smud6ie. Thanks

I've been looking at a lot of flag related sites but haven't seen that one. It seems just what hes been looking for to me.  Wonder what the postage would be from USA.

Oh, just seen its only for a 1inch flag pole, i'll see if they have a bigger one :)

I was thinking that the idea could be used to fabricate your own  :)

If hubby goes to a chandlers and asks to see some "Englefield Clips", he will see they come with swivels and there is no way a breeze will separate the clips.  They are used on small sails on small boats.

Cheers,   Tony.

Thats another good idea Tony.  Can see that you wouldn't want sails to wrap around the mast in the wind would you. A flag  is sort of similar
