Title: Separating Mum and chicks
Post by: Tiggersmate on June 29, 2010, 20:44
Hi,
Can anyone tell me what is best age to put Mum back in with rest of flock and separate chicks until big enough to join them?

My chicks are 4 weeks old and mum is looking like she's hankering after playing out with her mates. lol

I've always let mine make the decision - usually mum takes the chicks with her back to the main coop. The only time mum here has left early and left them behind was this year with the ducklings at nearly three weeks - but they were bigger than her already and they couldn't get into the chicken coop! I'd see if she just takes them with her one evening  :)

I'd agree unless you want to separate them I'd let them all join the flock.  Mum will stop nurturing them between 6 ad 8 weeks and they'll then be on their own.  You may have to introduce them gradually unless they have been in sight of the flock.
