Tried an experiment on perching problem
« on: January 09, 2011, 19:54 »
For a long time now i have had one of my girls always sleep on the floor of their coop.
Reading the advice on here about placing the bird on the perch once they are sleepy, i have tried & tried, but with no luck.

What i experimented with was when i clean them out, which is once a week & a poo pick everyday, i left the area where she is sleeping so it got really messy.
I hated doing this, but after a while she started to perch with the others.

I cleaned this area up on the next full clean & would you believe it, she had gone back to sleeping on the floor.
Again i left this area so it got dirty & again she started perching with the others.
Cleaned the whole coop out again yesterday & she's back the floor again.

She obviously doesn't like a dirty floor, but i can't leave it in a mess.

Any other ideas i could try.

Could you make a floor standing perch - bit of wood nailed onto a base - for that area.  If she has to perch to use that bit of floor, maybe she'll get the message and perch with the rest.  Even if she uses the floor perch at least you can pull it out and clean it  :)

I have to coops and 11 chicks. They are all sleeping in the one coop and laying in the other. There is not enough room for them to all perch so they sit on the floor. I was told not to worry as they are a happy bunch and i get loads of eggs.

They are all still laying & are very healthy.
The only thing i noticed a while ago is the one on the floor has no feathers on her underside between her legs.
I put this down to the mess she was sleeping in as the others that perch are ok.

I'll see if i have any timber left in the garage & see if i can make a small free standing perch to try.

Hello Craig, I have had two out of four who never perched, they just snuggled up on the floor. The breeder didn't have perches in the houses so I suppose they never bothered unless they were outside. I always poo pick every day and make sure there is a good layer of hemcore on the floor so they are comfy at night - when it is very cold they sometimes snuggle up in the nest boxes. They have perches outside in the run and use those so they must be quite happy as they are!

You could try making the floor uncomfortable.  How about scrunched up chicken wire?  She might not find that so cosy

i placed some gravel on the botton of my coop and all she did (Blanche) was scrape a big hole , so i went back to shavings and made her a floor perch which she now uses !!
and i swear to this day she still gives me the look as if to say where is my bed space

You could of course just leave her. Different birds prefer different things, there's nothing wrong with her sleeping on the floor if that's what she prefers. Mine all sleep on the floor in piles of shreaded paper and wood chips and sleep on top of each other for warmth.

I think the problem is that if you make it all comfy and cosy on the floor, why would they want to perch? Maybe it's a bit like children finding it more comfy in mummy's bed so why would they want to sleep anywhere else?

The main reason i want her off the floor is because i think it's the mess she is sleeping in is the cause of her losing her feathers underneath as the others are ok & they perch at night! I think it could be the amonia that has burned the feathers away.
I thought she was starting to moult back along, but it has been like this for about 6 months now.
I'm not that worried about it as she is healthy & it doesn't seem to bother her, & understand they will do what they want at the end of the day!

with some of mine that refused to perch I made a slatted floor so most of their poop would fall through, they had no choice to but to stand on the slats as they covered the whole floor  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I've never looked inside one - but isn't it silly that you can rattle yor brains thinking about something but can't think of the obvious sometimes :D
