I am getting sick of white fly on pretty much everything at the moment. They are on the soil surface in pots, all over my container carrots, lettuce and are difficult to remove because of this. You cant squash them of spray them off as they are on the surface. have tried mint leaves, garlic etc but ALL don't work. I don't use chemical spray so does anyone know of something that does work and harmless to other insects, animals etc ?

Whitefly are best sprayed early on before they get a proper hold, and then regularly with soapy water. If one doesn't take the time to spray, one has to put up with them when they appear... that's the deal for all growers I'm afraid.
 
There isn't another effective non chemical solution that I know of, apart from ensuring the growing location is the right one for the plants chosen. Not so easy in home gardens. I have had trouble with them every year in my garden room, so now grow things differently there.

I tell you another thing, I haven't seen a single ladybird this year.
