I wish I knew what I've done differently this year from previous seasons. Normally by now my celeriac have just started to swell but this year they are already bigger than grapefruit. I did what I always do and germinated them over heat in February and planted them out in April in well-manured soil. At their present growth rate they'll be the size of pineapples by the end of summer. Must be the May/June drought ans warm soggy July (plus a generous helping of Growmore)

Shhhh! Don't tell anyone but mine seem to be doing OK as well. This year I decided to really spoil them and if that didn't work I wasn't going to bother any more. So I matured the ground well and planted the little plants when they were ready. I have had fed and watered them regularly and they Re in a sunny position. Perhaps I have discovered what they like.

Shortage of rain is rarely an issue in N Cumbria (there are still over 1000 homes drying out after Storm Desmond last December) but there's certainly something different this year
