I was astonished by the size of battery hen eggs compared to my little ones from my light sussex and maran.  Thinking of getting some to go with the 6 that I have( maybe in a separate run, where can i get them and is it true that they wont lay for long.

Rescueing battery hens is to be applauded. The hybrid hens can lay for a few years although realistically their performance tapers off significantly after 12 - 18 months. The industry calls them "spent" after this time. And yes there eggs can be large. A mature battery hen will be laying eggs at least classified as medium (53g - 63g), most probably classed as large (64g - 73g).

Is egg production important to you? Even a spent hybrid can still be more productive than some pure breeds. So they could be a great idea.

Good luck
MJ
