Ladybird or Caterpillar Eggs?
« on: August 20, 2009, 18:21 »
Hi everyone.

I've found yellow eggs on the underside of my broccoli leaves but don't know whether to squish them or not.

I've Google Imaged "caterpillar eggs" and "ladybird eggs" and they look the same.

Should I squish them or not? (On the basis that I don't want caterpillars on my brassicas)

Thanks.

Gary

Don't quote me on this (as I'd hate for you to do the wrong thing) but I'd hazard a guess at caterpillars as I've been finding them, and the ladybirds are already hatched and (hopefully) having a good dinner of whitefly etc.

Welcome Gary

I thought the same about theer appearance when I googled and asked the same question a few months ago.

To quote Salmo in his response to mine :

"Ladybird eggs are smooth, cabbage white eggs are ribbed. You may need a hand lens."

I have to be honest, I've hundreds of ladybirds so any yellow eggs I see near my brassicas get squished.
Paul, Andrew, Kevin, Galen - My parents got bored of normal names in the end!

I`m not 100% sure on this but i think the Large Cabbage White lays the clusters of yellow eggs that hatch into the yellow and black caterpillars while the Lesser Cabbage White lays single yellow eggs that hatch into the green caterpillars.
I think ladybird eggs are laid single and are more orange than yellow.Hope this helps.
