horse manure
« on: February 10, 2011, 09:38 »
what is the best thing to do with horse manure ? I have an allotment but the debate is whether it should it be dug into the soil as soon as it comes from the stable or should it be left to rot to kill any seeds that are within the manure. I am puzzled to know what to do as I don't want other types of weed to get into my soil

Best left to rot, fresh manure can burn plants, the weed issue aside. I stack mine for a year before using.

Fresh manure can be used as a top dressing over winter.

Welcome to the forums.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Stack it neatly, spread soil/loam on top, cover with a cloche and use it as a hot bed as it rots down.  ::) Double the use.  ::)  Cheers,   Tony.

Six months to rot enough for use and yours will be ready as your Autumn mulch. Most stables have a rotted pile somewhere for use now. I put mine on top and dig in about now.

Make a hot bed as described above and plant your strawberries in it. Just like the old timers.

If you only have fresh manure little & often you could add it into your compost heap as a layer every 6" or so - that will accelerate the heap and raise its temperature and the speed of composting.  (You can do that too if you have a huge pile of horse manure too, of course :) )
