new allotmenteer and spacing
« on: December 30, 2006, 23:06 »
Hello everybody.
I've recently taken over an allotment sized meadow with couch grass aplenty.
I've double dug ten beds down one side so far. Roughly eleven and a half foot long by five foot wide.
Two beds to go. Space at the end(just about) for horse manure.
Two spade lengths (16 ")between each bed for workways/walkways.
The other side I intended to dig I've decided to wait for the rotavator. Apperently I'ts free for the first year.
I wish they'd hurry up and do it.
Anyway,I'd like to hear some advice about planting in beds.
This may be a daft question but when books talk about spacing how close to the edge of my bed can I go?
Patrick.

welsome to the gang patrick  leave just enough space to be able to hoe is fine i normally leave about 6 inches for onions and a foot for cabbage type plants .leeks again is 6 inch from the edge.if you have couch grass  ( twitch ) ....do not ,, i repeat do not rotavate it as this will chop it all up and increase it tenfold and you will be worse off than ever .eradicate it with digging it out and or glyphosphate ( roundup ) poisoning and may your days be happy  my paths are wide enough to be able to walk comfortably with a wheel barrow .24 inch or so
still alive /............

Thankyou Muntjac.
Could I plant potatoes 6" in?
Couch has been sprayed already, courtesy of Birmingham city council.
So hopefully I'll not be pulling too much of it out.
Your plot looks well tended.
When I figure out how to post pics I'll show how my plot looked/looks.

Why is row spacing wider than between plant spacing?
