Thought I'd nearly "cracked" growing Florence (bulb) Fennel last year by sowing it quite late so it didn't bolt in the "hot" weather. 

Turns out they probably didn't bolt because the frost nobbled them before they had a chance to, because this year I started them off a bit earlier and now they've all bolted (keep telling myself how delicious the fern is but a veg course it definitely ain't!) 

Has anyone out there managed to do better than that? (and of course how, especially on sandy soil.)

I did manage a quick crop from an April sowing, but grew more than we could eat and the other (of course) bolted.

Sowed some more six weeks ago and they are making nice fat bases now 

Only got ten, as that will be more than enough. I have had them under debris netting, which keeps them cooler on the rare occasion we have a hot day

We seem to do really well with them. Never had any problems......sown in july and havesting now.  We are on fairly heavy clay...maybe this is the difference?
