fruit tree rootstocks
« on: November 07, 2012, 23:43 »
A couple of years down the road I would like to try grafting my own fruit trees, I know I can buy rootstocks and do my own grafts.  I would like to try growing my own rootstocks as well and am aware of the different varieties for each fruit.
My question is what should I be planting to have a m9/quince rootstock for example.

Thanks

The rootstocks are themselves are not grown from seeds..... but by stooling - explained here

http://portageperennials.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/the-step-by-step-guide-to-plant-propagation.gif

so you need a rootstock to grow further rootstocks! If you started from seed you'd have no idea what would happen :nowink:

You can buy them for £3 a piece, also they are it appears 2 years old before they are usable. So not a case of get a few going and use next year. You will end up cultivating rootstocks.

These sell to the public:

Suppose you could buy a couple, grow them then cultivate new stock by cuttings, air layering or ground layering.

Possibly more useful to search and see if anyone does them cheaper and if so just buy them in. Especially if you are looking at small numbers.

Thanks for the replies,
I will probably buy a few in and  I have the space to try stooling on a couple.
Sg6 i saw that website also but they only have apples/pears, and I was hoping to get cherry and plum also.

Thanks again

Rainsbrook Nurseries have pear and cherry rootstocks and they sell on ebay. Just search for rootstock.
