Fennel bulbing up
« on: September 09, 2008, 18:00 »
Hiya anyone had any luck with their Fennel bulbing up yet. I planted from seed Romanesco from suffolk herbs plenty of top growth but nothing you could call a bulb yet.  Nothing like the bulb in the picture, well as I said not even a bulb.  Said harvest from September so have been patiently waiting.

I have used the stems and leaves of one of them just so not wasted.

No luck at all with my fennel this year, it didn't grow at all.  Do you think yours may have "bolted"?

Quite possibly Ice as I have picked of what looks like flower buds.  Have you grown it before and did it work?

It only grew well for me two summers ago when it was warmer.  Last year it bolted and this year nothing.  It seems a bit fickle.  Might investigate if there is a variety that is easier and less likely to bolt.

my first few attempts bolted,  although i think i will get some nice baby fennel from a late sowing.

i've let the first lot go to seed and i plan to harvest and dry the seed for cooking instead!  I'm hoping that they will be like fennel seed you buy - or does that come from the herb version?

don't know jennyb and doubt you would find the answer on google.  Suppose you could ask the question in a new post, so it is more noticable.

Florence fennel is grown for the edible bulb and is not the same as the herb. Seeds come from the herb version  :D

Put some bulb fennel seed in a spare space a bit late one and let it take pot luck. The bulbs are not round and fat so much as flat but they taste like fennel. One bolted but it goes perfectly well in soup or stir fry. Have had three or four bulbs out so far and will get a few more.

I suspect in my case that the soil has not been well enough prepared but this will not be a problem next season and will certainly give it another go.
