I like a nice tight fit looking bird myself.

Chickens split down the middle very roughly and are catergorised as being either soft or hard feather. Pekins are soft feather, where as breeds such as Seabrights or Leghorns are classed as being hard feather.
As I say, my preference is for hard feather breeds of bantams and large fowl. They tend to be more active and because they are not 'puffy' or feathery, they tend to stay cleaner.

I have 3 (or 4) pekins, (one we're not convinced is a whole one!!) and I love them! We also have a brahma bantam, they are all friendly apart from the brahma who is timid and a pain to catch!!
Violet, my pekins have trashed the flower bed and scratched a bald patch in the grass(this was while free ranging!) and I heard they didn't scratch much!! But the not 100% pekin showed them all how to destroy the garden, now they all join in!   Apart from the brahma...she did try one day but fell over!! She's a lot more immature than the others!
Belinda, I would def recommend them, they are funny to watch shuffling round the garden, and both my neighbours (who don't have any) love watching them!

Thanks Daisycow Think I have made my mind up to have 3 Pekins now. My OH is out in the garage at the moment making the hen house so fingers crossed in a couple of months I should have some :)

You will enjoy them Belinda...there are pics of mine on another thread

http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=15110

The black ones (one black, 2 mottled) are the true pekins, the white one is the 'not 100% pekin' and the ginger one is the brahma.  :D

They are really sweet. I have been to see some buff and lavender ones. Don't really mind what colour they are though. :D

Thank you, I didn't mind what colour, but OH had seen a v.friendly black one, so got into his head that the black ones were friendly, then he saw the mottled ones and fell in love!    They are all friendly though!!
