spuds coming up everywhere
« on: May 23, 2021, 21:40 »
Hi all. We set our potatoes at Easter, 2 shorts rows of main crop & 1 of 2nd earlies in our small veg plot
( 10 per row)exactly the same way as in the past 10 yr's, hilling up when set & re-hilling as they start to show but this year the 2nd's are taking ages to show & the mains are coming up in between the rows, this has happened with the odd 1 before but not this many. My question is will it be ok if we fill the whole area with multi purpose compost making I large mound. I realize it will make lifting them more difficult but at least they will be covered. Anybody else had this happen ?
Bit of a silly question but any comments welcomed.
Keith.

Absolutely have a go.  I threw potatoes with green flesh into our compost heap as they weren't good for eating.  Now I have the healthiest potato plants I've ever seen growing there!   :tongue2:  You might as well have a go.  You're not going to have any success the way your potatoes are now.

Potatoes do seem slow this year but at the same time it also appears to be the year of the volunteer.

I’ve stopped making a mound over the seed potato for this reason as I feel it encourages them to come out at the side (less soil I imagine & quicker to get to the light) I just start earthing them up when they come through. You’re suggestion won’t hurt, well maybe you’re pocket, but as you say getting them out will be more work but you may get the best potatoes ever :D
