How does everyone store their seeds?
« on: January 16, 2014, 20:54 »
The draw where I store my seed packets is getting rather full. The other day I found some of them in the draw below it, which is concerning because if it's so stuffed they're falling out at the top I could misplace some of this years. I cannot bring myself to throw some away, especially when they're still in date. So looks like they're going to need their own dedicated storage rather than a spare draw.

What does everyone else use to safely store their seeds in a moisture/mouse proof manner? I saw some seed storage tins for sale online but they look too small and pricey for what they do to me

I have just treated myself to a posh, sage green, purpose made tin with a lid to replace my enormous, old tatty, biscuit tin. :)

it looks good but is a little on the small side. Perhaps it will encourage me not to buy more seeds than I really need.

Naw I think I might order a second one.

One of those old plastic briefcases, which I rescued when an aged parent passed on...

It was used for something similar - loads of old photos etc, and the old Bols box (remember them) had fallen apart, so he bought this purple one from Woolworths for just a few pence...

I can actually file each packet properly, but 'p' gets a bit full with peas, parsnip, parsley etc, and so does 'c' with celeriac, carrot etc etc...

Seed packet gets put into a zip lock bag (to reduce moisture content - this slows aging process) and I put them into cheap A5 size envelopes with the name on the top edge so that it is standardised and easier to read when my fingers do the walking.  I also write simple sowing instructions (germinating temperature, month etc) and batch year on the front so that the information is readily available.  Then put into A-Z order into something like one of THESE - I use different drawers for seasons/varieties  ;) And there's plenty of room for saved and bulky seeds such as green manures.  It's organised and I can easily find stuff - best investment I ever made.

Mine are in thick plastic zip wallets.  I have quite a few labelled for example Greens, Greenhouse, Tomatoes, Root Veg, Outdoor salad, Herbs, courgettes and squash and an extra large one for all the beans, peas etc  (these also seem to spill out in the bottom of the box I put them in).  All placed within easy reach in a bookcase....

.... then there is another box with all the annuals and flower seeds...

........then as you go around the house there are seed packs behind the coffee and tea tubs in the kitchen, the dresser drawers, some leftovers in the recycled washing powder box in the greenhouse and also in the outside loo.... I haven't got a problem..Honest

Biscuit tins! Don't see the need for much else; as long as it's cool where they're kept.

I did see Alys Fowler on Twitter ages ago talking of having a sealed, temperature controlled box for hers (Very Mission:Impossible), but then she's one of the pros!

I currently have 5 plastic storage tubs that this year I have reorganised in to 1 for flowers & the rest labelled early, spring, late spring oh & herbs & green manures. I used to have them in months but march over spilled its own box into April & that upset my equilibrium  I'm really not OCD, even though DD says I am

Mine are kept in two biscuit tins and a carrier bag. The one tin is full of flower seeds collected over the last few years off the plants. :)

So far managing with two plastic boxes from the £1 shop

New seeds are in their packs with rubber bands around same of similar types and those open last year are now in small self sealing hobby bags with labels printed with the instructions and details off the original packet stored in two small plastic boxes in alphabetical order, all very OCD

The boxes are kept in Harry Potters Bedroom (under the stairs) as it's not heated and dark
