Your Favourite Peas?
« on: March 09, 2013, 13:32 »
I usually grow old stalwarts Kelvedon Wonder and the Onwards, as they don't grow too tall and crop so well.

Thought I'd like to try something different, too, this year, though - maybe a petit pois.

Just wondered what everyone's favourites were for sweetness, yield and flavour?

Thanks,

Pim.

Greenshaft are good, Kelvedon Wonder are good, but you can't buy my favourites!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I am trying Alderman's this year.  I like Kelvedon Wonder too.  I also love growing sugar snaps and mange tout.  I grow Shiraz purple mange tout and Golden mange tout.

Not many make it home though with my 4 and 5 year olds, who delight in showing their friends how to pod peas at the plot!

where did you get your magnum bonum  peas? I've been trying to find some for a few years now  :(

I like the purple podded marrowfat peas and also grow Alderman. Also a few others to build up seed stocks..

Thanks very much, all - I love hearing your suggestions!

DD, what is your favourite?? A hard-to-come-by heritage variety, perhaps?

And is Waverex a good cropper, those who grow it?

Yes, Stokesely.

I've also built up a decent quantity of Kent Blue and Salmon Flowered Crown peas.

I'm doing the seed guardian thing again this year and hope to get something really rare!

Something really rare you already know the name of, or something you have never heard of ever before sort of rare?

Never heard of it before - which is what you're usually presented with.

Using all my years of experience, I'll go with the name I like the sound of!
