Title: Has anyone grown their own hops?
Post by: paul_holmes on February 06, 2007, 08:45
I have got seeds to start growing hops. I hear they grow as high as 10 feet and I am concearned they may need more space than my allotment. If anyone has tried this then I would love to know, I havent planted them yet, so if anyone can help then let me know.

Many thanks

Paul

Hi I've grown hops on my allotment for four years, i bought the plants from mail order (Golding and Fuggles). I train the plants up strings to height of approx 16 foot. 6 shoots from each plant are trained with the other being cut off, you can replant these cut shoots for additional plants next year. I normally cut the plants down in early September, and dry the hops for beer making. The plants are quite easy to grow, after i cut them down, i just cover the plants with well rotted manure or compost and they will return in the spring.

Hop this helps, also have a look at the site shown below
