Title: Wish I was a vet at times!
Post by: GrannieAnnie on October 20, 2009, 22:45
5 Minutes to drain Penny's ear (as she has an oral oedema again), clean her ears with a couple of cotton buds and squirt a few drops of Canaural down and quick massage the ear canal. Small bottle of Canaural for me to give her drops for a week.  £69.26 please!   :( :(

Oh and if it keeps happening, we'll have to drain it all down, and stitch around the ears to hold the issues together, under a general anaesthetic, and that'll be £212.00!!!!
Vet drives a lovely car!!!!!  :)

Rocky's kidneys failed, two nights at vets before decision made ! Then a week later Fudge (my bitch) had to have a hysterectomy (sp) then a few days after that she collapsed with bleeding from her ..... turned out the pyomera (sp sp sp) had gone into her bladder.  In all £850.  Fortunately the vets allowed us to pay off on a weekly basis but were told 'miss one payment and the whole lot will be due'. Our vet is lovely and is now a TV star appearing on 'Cat Island' for those who get Meridian.

Pyametra for my Newfoundland  X two years ago (luckily spotted early - brown liquid oozing and the fact that she kept drinking loads of water - so no spreading infection) cost us including 2 nights stay afterwards and all meds - metacam and antibiotics - cost me £825.
Grannie we also had the same ear problem in our Oscar (GSD) caused by Deefor (fatter version of Penny - who later went on to die of kidney failure and heart attack) when as a pup she dragged Oscar round by his ears. Luckily draining worked for him.
Have got Olliepops insured as I know her breed (Neapolitan mastiff)are known to have problems with their eyes (cherry eye) and their bones being very large and prone to breaking/dislocation, and skin infections due to the wrinkles. Mind you the insurance is just under £20 a month so soon mounts up  :(.

that was expensive, instead of wishing you were a vet i wouldnt mind being married to one            We know all about vet bills, before we had our gsd put to sleep we tried everything for him, then it came to claiming back on our insurance only to realise we werent covered as he had something similar when he was a puppy, it cost us a fortune, he was put to sleep september 2008 and ive just paid the last instalment last month, nitemare, although i still would give everything to have my dog back :(.  nickyx

I'm with you Nicky, I'll marry one please  I know of two very good looking vets, sadly I believe they are both already taken  >:(

One of my cats, Thorsy, is only 18 months old and he has already cost over £1,000 in vets bills. He has a gastric problem and had he remained feral would not have made it as most food causes him to get ill, temperature spikes and severe vomiting and upset tum. Has had two overnight stays in the vets already. Thankfully I insured him as soon as I got him so in reality it has only cost me £50 for all his treatment. He is on rolling cover as well as will always be covered as long as I pay monthly - his premium first year was £8 per month, not it's £16 per month, but has still payed for itself many years over!

Vets may cost a lot, but worth every penny for the treatment I've had to get for mine.

I find it hard to understand why vets have to have 'sleep in people' when they have dogs overnight but not any other animals. Apparently that is the reason why dog bills are higher.  Fortunately never had any real big problems with my horses or I would be bankrupt by now.

Do you have 'pet' insurance on your horses Wighty????

We did when they were younger Grannie, but Theseus is now about 38 , Cassius about 34 and Chicory about 36 so they won't accept them.  They are all retired and spend their days doing whatever they would like to do out in their field.  If someone was ill I'm afraid the deed would be done and they would be buried with the rest at the bottom in the 'bog area'. The only one who is insured is Bad Harry who is only 26 who my dad bought for a pound but they won't accept him after this year. None are ridden and just do what they want to do.  They are all on the mainland (at Farnham, Surrey) and are looked after by my friend Jane who keeps her two on my land for free in return.

When I lived in the Uk about 7 years ago, I rescued 2 kitties. Lovely fluffy black kitties that had been abandoned. To cut a long story short, one had Perthes disease in 2 hips and the other 1 in just 1. The ops cost £1200.00 , for that, they removed the hip joints and sewed them back up :D Thank goodness they were insured.
When we moved here, Alfie, another rescue had a run in with something big. The vet said, we need to remove his hip joint, I thought, oh no here we go again. They kept him in for 2 days. Removed the hip and sewed him back up. The cost 200 euros ::)
Wish my vet bills were that low now

I have insurance for my cats and dog after spending most of my savings when  Peter was poorly last year.
It costs me about 15 quid a month for the lot of them for basic cover, which means if they are ever diagnosed with a life long condition I am only covered for a year so hopefully that won't happen!
I suppose there are pro's and cons about pet insurance but it gives me peace of mind should anything really nasty happen to them.

Peter had a growth in his throat, and it was either PTS or treat him. How could I not treat the little darling?
I took a weeks emergency annual leave to nurse him, and was £800 lighter in my pocket after the episode.

Mad???
Yes probably.  :D

I had a long chat with my pal the vet about charges and wages. His feeling is that they're underpaid (he views doctors as overpaid one species specialists) but even so, when you look at the cost of equipment and premises etc, theatre time is very expensive.

On vets charges I'm looking at another big set of bills  :(  My Thorsy (in my avatar), who already has the digestive problems, has been having breathing difficulties and the vet thinks bronchial and possible asthma. Had to take him to the emergency vets just, but they now have normal pricings on Sunday day instead of the £100 fee - phew! Thank gawd for that pet insurance  ::) I was meant to keep him in, before I could even shut the cat basket back up he was out of the house and is sat on a neighbours shed looking at me thumbing his lovely little nose

I wouldn't argue that they are well worth it for their expertise and the time they take to train has to be considered. They are after all professionals. What upsets me is the "let's push this product" attitude. i.e. special diets or expensive joint aids. Seemed to me, whenever I went to my vet, I'd sit in the waiting room and be astounded at the money going over the counter for repeat scrips of the same thing. Dogs didn't used to have to have special diets, so why is that the answer to every ailment now...........something dreadfully wrong somewhere  :(
I used to do the daily dog walk with the same people for years. One by one it seemed that the local vet prescribed their dogs diet food, and a disproportionate (sp?) amount of them them were prescribed it for pancreatitis! I was with my vet for 25 years but towards the end I lost all confidence  regarding general ailments; of course trauma and therefore that expensive theatre time is a completely different kettle of fish

It's like any professional, we can only do our best to judge how good they are and impartial. I was told of one vet who had a great manner with the owners but wasn't actually very good. Owners loved him, as he doled out sympathy.

Like bookies I have never seen a vet struggling for money. Having said that I have insurance on my 2 dogs. Lifelong cover and it costs about £44 a month. Excess is £60. Not claims yet but If I do it will be worth it because some treatments can cost thousands and I value my dogs beyong money.
I expect a very high standard for my money and at present am somewhat dissatisfied with my vet. She cannot examine my bitch who hates her. Not good with large dogs apparently so the gossip goes.

I dont know if its ok , ethical or indeed right,
BUT
My cats get baby calpol and baby ibrufofin if they are poorly.
And it always works!

I've used baby calpol to bring Thorsy's temperature down before. Works really well, adn it was a vet who suggested it to me so I doubt it causes any harm.

Just for anybody reading this - never give a cat aspirin.
Title: Re: Wish I was a vet at times!
Post by: Caralou on October 25, 2009, 23:23
Child's calpol contains paracetamol although different versions on the market now contain different active ingredients), and again should really only be used if a vet states it is okay for your pet to have it. Mine advised it for Thor's spiking temperature (he suffers from this regularly when his gastric problems arise), but for some breeds and ages it can be lethal.

I have enough trouble getting Calpol down my 4 year old.... I wouldn't be brave enough to try and get a cat to take it too!    :D

PS.. Thorsy is a very pretty cat... and I bet he knows it!
My Mac is a looker and he certainly makes the most of it  :D

Hugs to you and Thorsy - I hope he is feeling better soon

Aaw, looks like he has a stripey tail...Yogi pulls that face, when he has his tummy rubbed too. :D

He does have a stripey tail along with tabby patches on his sides and top of his head. When he was a kitten he was semi-longhaired, but grew out of it (for which I am grateful as he leaves a big white fur patch where he sleeps as it is). At the vets yesterday they asked if he was more sedate than usual, he's the only cat that it is really hard to answer that with as he never moves off the bed despite being only 18months old, he's not even a big play cat, just loves his sleep and cuddles!

Thor has had be kitty hospitalised. He is really having trouble breathing now. Waiting on news  :(

Thorsey had serious difficulty breathing and Cara rushed him to the vet who x-rayed to confirm no foreign objects.

He's got fluid on his lungs and is on steroids to help them clear it and oxygen. He's staying overnight.

We're fingers crossed for him. He's only 18 months and has always been a bit sickly.

I'm to phone again in the morning. He was purring at the nurses last time I spoke to them and he seemed brighter in himself. I've been belting back and forth between my house and Phils (as thats where mum had the kittens), but thankfully mum is doing so well with kittens that I dont need to be with her as much so can spend some time nursing him when he gets home. Thorsy has always been sickly, I just hope there's nothing more sinister that hasnt been diagnosed so I'm going to have some blood works done just to rule out any nasties.

Thor is a bit better this morning, but still needing to stay at the vets for his breathing. I'm to phone again later and if it's another overnight stay I will be popping up to give him some cuddles. The other cats however thought it was great last night and this morning as they all got wet food (Thor cant digest without sickness so they all get the same normally), I've not seen all of them line up and eat together so happily for months  ::)

Sending lots of Reiki and healing thoughts to you all ;)

Thorsy is home now, but does have asthma and is on steriods. Back to the vets on Friday for a check up. I've had to move him back to the specialist sensitive diet as his stomach ahs flared up with the stress  :( Such a sickly boy for 18months old, but also so loving and very happy to be home - Caesar has been his shadow and was obviously missing him very much. Jelly, any ideas on things that can naturally help cats with breathing problems as it's not something I've had before and want to try everything I can with him? On a good note the vet said he can carry on being an outdoors cat as I was worrying if he had to be kept in how I would do that with 6 others!
