Hello all,

I have planted a few rows of beetroot before (never bothered until i got some given and roasted it - now i have to grow plenty as its so good!

The seedlings came up ~3 weeks ago but are still really tiny, they don’t look to have grown much at all.

Do they normally take a long time to take a foot hold, or are they missing something - food/light??

Mine are the same. 2 small leaves per plant slightly above the soil line and lots of them.

Not sure of the difference between them and some of the weeds so have left alone until I know.

My neighbour did say they can take ages depending on weather.

Mine are the same been planted ages I think the cold weather slowed them down a bit..

Yes, they're slowpokes to begin with and the cool weather has slowed them a bit more. Once a bit of heat comes along they'll perk up again.

Heh thanks for in the info, had a look this morning and they have a couple more leaves on now so i think your right about the warm.

Just have to cover them soon as its going to Frost this week!?!?!?

Following a tip from one of the old timers on my site, I start mine in pots and transplant them when they're 2-3 inches high. They really fly as soon as you put them in and you don't have to worry about thinning.

I always start mine in modules in the greenhouse, like tric1962 says they soon shoot up once planted. Although slightly labour intensive inititally, it certainly pays later. no thinning, and of course you save loads of seeds this way! I do it with everything, don't like broadcast sowing and then thinning, wastes seeds!
(oh except carrots and peas - carrots don't like it, peas don't need it!)
