Have i got a tiny allotment?
« on: April 28, 2009, 00:18 »
i was just wondering what size the average allotment was
as i have just got mine after waiting three years.
and it measures 40 square metres.

when i look at the size of other allotment holders ive noticed some have chicken runs bigger than my plot.

ive got it jam packed with veg growing at the moment

but there is no room to even sit back and relax.. it would take the space of a couple of plants.

there are benefits like weeding takes very little time
my fellow allotment holders call my plot , precision gardening

but i need a bigger plot

Thats blinkin tiny! Mines a full size (for my area) of 252sqm. Cant you ask for a larger area in a bit?

Mine's 300 sq m, Mrs Digger's a bit bigger, then half one of about 150 sq m.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It's not how big your plot is it's how you sow your seed  :D i bet you get more than some with bigger plots as some tend to be all paths.

Ours is a half plot at about 80sq m - but we've decided to put our names on the list for a full plot. Like george007 says, barely room to sit down once you've got some plants in...

what i find really irritating
is some people have double allotments and never seem use all of what they have been given.

we also have 6 full size allotments that have not been used in the last five years.

i thought there was meant to be a shortage of allotments.

i was certainly not offered any of the vacant plots.

i may have to get in touch with the local press and bring my plight to their attention.

we also have a rule thats states if you have not cultivated at least 50% of your plot
within three months  you can lose it.

so i fail to see why there are vacant plots

i have 3 plots, two are 7m x 30m and one is 10m x 35m, and yes i have a chicken pen on that one that is 8m x 10m, which is bigger than your plot, but it makes the chickens happy.

Speak to whoever allocates allotments !

You may find it's policy to allocate a starter plot to assess if the tenant is serious about GYO.  It may be swapped for a larger plot next season if you do well on it this year.

I have a few plots that I keep showing people with a view to let but have had no tennants on them for two years.
Reason being that they have a high hedge and trees to one side and newbies think that you cant grow anything because half the plot in in the shade first thing and last thing. We have people who are way down the waiting lists for our site and others in the area, but still no one wants them. So what is one supposed to do ?

I have 300sqm, roughly split 150sqm veg, 50sqm flowers/ fixed plants, 100sqm work in progress (going to be the squash and pumpkin farm this year).

If you want a bigger plot then I would politely badger the allotment committee. Not much point putting effort into a small plot if you move off soon and if you are polite and enthusiastic then you have a better chance of being moved on.

We have full occupancy with only one plot being neglected. This is a bit of a pain, but it is left this way as the committee are an easy going bunch and don’t chase up/ off those who don’t put much time or effort in. It may be that this is the case on your site which can work two ways in that you don’t get much hassle to keep things tidy, but you end up with a few wasted plots.

that seems a bit mean - so many things can go wrong, like illness (chronic illnesses in particular mean there are good days & bad days), bad weather, work (some of us do have full time work!), family commitments, the task taking longer than anticipated (especially if you have to clear it first, or make remedial repairs to stop the entire site draining excess water on your plot, or fix the communal footpaths to make them safe to walk on!!!!)

As for starter plots, I think these are a great idea for those who have never done this sort of thing before, providing a full size plot is offered after a suitable probationary period.  However, I know several councils are going down this road just to get people off their waiting list, but it would be upsetting if this was the only solution to the problem.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

and there is the cost of tools :)
i still need all the same tools as a person with a a much bigger plot.
and i'm not allowed a shed to keep to keep them in
i'm forever walking back to my flat to get that tool ive forgotten.

i'm not whinging  im just a bit frustrated

little things like
plant a few   every two weeks  for a sucsession of crops

like where?

no wonder  some new allotment holders think what is the point.

i enjoy myself though .

when i was told i was getting a plot
i went out and spent over £200  on tools  and a wheelbarow ,coldframe etc
i had this idealistic dream in my head
sitting by my shed at the end of a sunny day .

ha it's more like playing hopscotch between the tightly packed plants
and go home unless i want to stand like a gnome doing nothing
