Quince removal
« on: February 11, 2008, 09:30 »
I have a lovely sheltered spot in the garden, south facing, perfect for growing tomatoes etc..The only trouble is there is a quince growing there! It is right against the house and i have spent a large part of the weekend trying to dig it out, with no luck. My neighbour (who has been here 50ish years) said 'you'll never dig that out! Does any one have any other suggestions? I want it gone!

Thanks.

I'd cut the tree down to about 3 foot off the ground. Then dig down around the root ball - cutting, chopping as many of the roots as you can. It will take a good long while unfortuantly.
Now use your 3 foot stump as lever, rocking/pulling the stump to loosen the roots as much as possible. Dig/chop/cut root again... repeat till its out.
If you've a good rip saw, long handled loppers and even an good strong long round iron bar (called "ringers" round my way) they'll all help to get in amongst the root ball. good luck!

digger, or just cut it down and finish roots off with stump killer thing, can't remember what it is called exactly.

we took three massive conifers out of our garden - with the aid of a pick axe so total sympathy with you!
