Prolapse or is it ???
« on: February 16, 2009, 10:19 »
Hiya :)

Noticed a blood streaked shell on an egg on Saturday, on examining all my girls found one that I noticed a very small prolapse, nothing like I've seen before just the tinyist amount of tissue sticking out.
Cleaned her all up thought I'd give her a day and see how she went on.
Yesterday another egg from her, good strong shell etc...  with a small amount of blood streaked on.

Today her back end was completely covered in blood but nothing sticking out that shouldn't be
Her comb is red and she is eating & drinking, poops blood streaked but then I suppose that's to be expected ?

No nasty smell round her botty???

I am ready to do the deed but just wondered what folks thoughts were - seems very odd that there is nothing hanging out.
Am I missing something ???

Sarah :)

Has she got a small (possibly internal) tear ?

Suppose it's possible ? Never thought of that :)
There was a lot of blood but nothing since I cleaned her up.

Don't want her to suffer if it's going to be an on going problem? But don't want to do the deed if it only a blip ???

I suppose the best thing will be to pop her in the dark to try & stop her laying and then see where I go from there :)

Many Thanks Aunt Sally :D

It might well be an internal tear, especially if she's laying larger eggs. I've had a few blood-streaked eggs lately from different hens and one did have a prolapse that I managed to put back and got some anti-inflammatories from the vet. That hen is ok now. Any chance you could keep her apart rom the others for a while...keep her nice and warm? That way if it does prolapse the others won't peck at it.

Apparently it can happen after a change of feed. Doesn't say why (p.145 of "the book")

No signs of pecking ??

Hope she gets better soon. :)

This from DLhunicorn.... Dragonflies and Dandelions

PROLAPSE OF THE OVIDUCT AND UTERUS
An extrusion of the interior cloaca and uterus to the
exterior and has the appearance of a red inflamed mass of
soft tissue at the vent.
It can occur following normal egg laying but is especially
common after an episode of egg binding. It is more likely
to occur in birds that are in poor physical condition (e.g.
muscle weakness, obesity or malnutrition). More likely
with malformed, soft or shell-less eggs.
Treatment:
• Keep exposed tissues moist and clean with copious
amounts of saline solution or a very dilute iodine
(Betadine / PVP-Iodine) or chlorhexidine solution
(Aviclens or Hibiclens)
• If no egg is present and tissue is not badly
damaged then gently replace the prolapsed tissue
by pushing it back in place with a moistened swab
or cotton bud
• Can and often does recur, however if treated early
have a good chance at complete repair................"

Many Thanks everyone for your replies :D
I have quarantined her (she's not happy about that)

She was sick (water) when I picked her up   (probably the way I grabbed her)

Have got my fingers crossed for a tear :)

Previous to that she was with the other girls helping me dig the pond so no sign externally of illness.
Interesting about the food Rob (must find that page), came home with mash by mistake last Wednesday, same manufacturer just not their usual pellets.
I went & got pellets on Thursday am but had to give them the mash for their breakie!

I shall keep a close eye

Hmmm.

Be interesting to know why new food can cause it. Poor absorption of minerals maybe ?

Finger crossed.
