Broad bean help
« on: April 30, 2010, 10:50 »
I have broad beans in my allotment - some were planted direct from seed and the seedlings are now an inch long. The others were seedlings given to me and are about 10 inches high.

I popped over the lottie today and have noticed that they are all going black around the leaves and edges. There doesn't seem to be anything crawling over them and my neighbours are the same. It looks as if the peas coming through are looking a bit black too.

I am new to this and don't know what it is or what I should do about it.

Many thanks

Donna

Not aware of any frosts. The leaves look a bit rough around the edges as well.

It could be leaf miner giving the ragged effect. They should recover OK from that. Not sure about the black edges, it could be a bit of frost nip as SS says. Give them a bit of a water and feed and see if they pick up. Broad beans are pretty sturdy plants.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Sorry to be asking loads of questions, but what do you feed broad beans with? I am new to all this and very confused with all the array of feeds, fertilisers, composts on sale at the garden centre! I haven't 'added' anything yet.
