Start the seeds off indoors , move to the greenhouse when the frosts have gone and keep them there as long as possible before you plant them out.
Big plants do seem to get going better than small ones.Plant on a good sized hole full of dung or garden compost.

Most importantly ............pray for a sunny summer.

The further North you are the more difficult it is to grow Butternuts. There are Butternut varieties that have been specially developed for the cooler conditions in the UK.

Love butternuts, grow them every year, from saved seed from the shops and they have done great, i always put them in after the winter kale and psb have come out, start off in pots about now, greenhouse or indoors then put out :) :) :)

I had great results last year with a squash called Jumbo Pink Banana by Unwins seeds.  They grew to the size of Rugby Balls.  In a good summer should grow even bigger.  We are in the north west so you should have no problem growing them.

I'm also trying to grow butternut squash in Glasgow.  I planted my seeds last week and they have started to come up.  I will need to pot them on soon as I didn't realise what chunky little devils they start out.  My baby boy just loves eating squash so that is one of the reasons for me trying it this year.  Can't remember the variety though.

I planted the seeds from a squash I ate from Aldi three weeks ago.  I've got about 20 of the triffids on the go, and had to put them under a cheapy plastic tunnel earlier this week as they threatened to take over the window sill!  I know it's a complete unknown, but I'm crossing my fingers that they will give me some squash, especially if its a sunny summer! :)

Echo everything said so far. Choose are really early cropping variety, I grew Harrier F1 (Tozer Seeds), with success last year. Took me three years to get a butternut to actually ripen. Shan't bother again though - will stick to types that I know crop better.

You can't really stay on our allotment site unless you can grow pumpkins and squash. The old boys have already got them on the top of their manure heaps, covered in glass.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
