Conference Pear Tree Problems
« on: November 24, 2012, 19:17 »
Hello,

I don't know what to do really, I bought a conference pear tree off tompson and morgan over two years ago. This was a two year old grafted stock. I planted up a big pot with john inns no.3. In the spring I got a load of buds and loads of leaves formed, then they turned brown and slowly died off and no fruit formed at all. I complained to t&m and they gave me my money back. This year has done the same and still no fruit. Im wondering what could be going wrong?

Sounds like it is dry. Not sure about it in a pot how big is the pot?

I might be inclined to agree - even when planted in the open ground they need to be kept well watered in the first year until the tap root develops.  I know some people grow trees successfully in big pots but unless it is on a dwarf root stock, I think the tree would do best in the ground.

In spring the leaves are tender so aphid problems are not unusual.  Use something like diluted soapy water sprayed on the affected areas rather than pesticide which kill visiting bees and natural predators such as ladybirds.  You'll need to repeat the soapy spray regularly until the leaves mature.

Re: fruit - my conference pears took nearly 5 years before fruit began to set and even then, it was only one out of 2 trees  ::)  Thereafter the numbers grew exponentially.  This year no fruit at all due to the cold wet weather in spring - so not really a good year all round anyway.  Also bear in mind that you bought just one tree - it is true they are self fertile, but you are more likely to get better pollination if there is more than one tree.
