Autumn King Carrots to maturity
« on: August 24, 2010, 14:15 »
Hi I sowed some Autumn King 2 Carrots and they have now been in the ground for 13 weeks.

How many weeks do they need to reach maturity? Sorry I have lost the packet, so can't check it. They are under Enviromesh so I don't want to risk lifting it and letting the Fly in unnecessarily.

Also has anyone frozen this variety before and if so what tips can you give and what results did you have.

Thanks FB

I grew Autumn King last year. Washed and cut into chunky pieces, parboiled for 2 minutes, put into cold water, drained and bagged into portions, then frozen. Lasted for ages. Probably similar shelf life to shop bought frozen veg.

I just leave carrots in the ground all winter, pulling them as I need them.  Even last winter they were not damaged by the frost.

So do I but last winter they were frozen in for some time, and I wished I had taken some home while I could dig them up

"I wished I had taken some home while I could dig them up".

Well there is that.  However I discovered that I could lift them, and the parsnips, right through the snow provided that I could find them.

Anyway, to answer the original posters' question, I understand that carrot flies do not like poor weather or disturbance so a quick lifting of the net probably won't do any harm.  I have never noticed any fly damage which could be attributed to weeding, thinning or harvesting.   So take some as you need them, preferably pulling the largest so that the others have more room to grow.

You could lift and store some in peat, potting compost or very well rotted manure against a big frost but not before November if you want to make the most of them.

To my mind freezing carrots is a waste of freezer space.

I agree with gillie, freezing carrots is a waste of space and they always seem to lose their texture.

If you are worried about frozen ground grow some in flower buckets and you can move them into a greenhouse or other protected area if severe weather is forecast.

You can also lift them and store in dry sand or peat to use when required.

I sowed 2 rows of Autumn King Carrots on 21st May (12 -13 weeks) and I have been picking good sized carrotts for about 4 weeks, just scrape the soil away from the tops and select the bigger ones then re-net.
