I remember reading somewhere that Autumn King is a good variety to grow if you want to leave your carrots in the ground longer as they never split ,and they have a fair bit of resistance to Carrot fly as well.

As I have grown Early Nantes for years which are really great early on but do tend to split badly once they get bigger I'm going to try Autumn King for a change.

Has anyone any experience as to their non splitting properties and also the apparent resistance, however slight, to the fly ?

Oh...and do they taste any good ?

Cheers. :D

Same here Dan, no splitting, but did get minimal fly damage.

Grow them every year & let them sit in the ground all winter.

No flies - but I've got a polythene fence around them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've grown Chantenay carrots this year, they've been excellent.

I'll leave them in the ground over winter and just dig them as required.

If it starts getting really cold I'll get round to covering them in straw.

I grow my carrots (and parsnips) under viromesh - ravaging carrot flies are but a distant memory for me.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

will the real frost weather burn the tops of the carrots off? as i have some in but the roots (bit yu eat) are not big enough so i was hoping come the Spring they would start to grow away again, what do you think
Used to be indecisive, now i'm not so sure...

The foliage may get pegged back a bit, but the main problem is that come the spring, they will start naturally running to seed & go woody regardless of size. Don't expect to see bigger carrots!
