Broad beans - too early/too late for autumn sowing?
« on: November 20, 2008, 12:18 »
Will I be all right to get autumn-sown broad beans in this weekend? I've forgotten when I did it last year - all I know is the autumn sown ones did a lot better than the spring ones.

(as long as it's not snowing of course...)

If you live in the east then its going to be mighty chilly to be doing anything outdoors i think!  no idea though otherwise!

Broad beans - too early/too late for autumn sowing?
The weather in the east looks cold, so if I was you, I would geminate first, then harden them, then plant them out.

They need to germinate to survive obviously, so if you can get them to germinate first then they will/should survive when planted out.

Try a windowsill or greenhouse.

I have some sown straight in the ground, they have taken and some that are in my makeshift 2ft greenhouse/germinator thingy. It has a bit of a draft, so they are hardening up already.
Thanks

As long as they are Aquadulce Claudia you can put them in anytime until the end of the year,I know of some who put them in in January.
I tend to put mine in mid October. They should show in 4/5 weeks.

Well, the forecast here for Friday is cold, but dry and sunny, so my Aquadulce Claudia  will be going in, covered by fleece.

Put mine in yesterday. Not sure what variety, they were some left over from another chaps plot, but fingers crossed. If they fail i will blame him. He planted his yesterday as well. :tongue2:

Hi Lozenge, as has been said if Aquadulce then will be fine.  Can i suggest you get yourself a basic diary and just jot down when you plant things, i did that last year and it is great as i can look back to help me plan for this year and you can adapt the planting timing if from last years experience it was too late or early.   :D

forgot to say, i also do a little sketch in the diary of what is planted where by row etc, that way if you do not mark the plot /row or forget (as i do)you can look back and see exactly what is what.  Simple stuff but werks for me  (think i may get away with that one whilst Munty is busy over the Border)
