Ladies meat bird project. More pic's added
« on: May 28, 2008, 21:24 »
We have a chook club in our village with quite a few members now and four of us (all ladies) wanted to have a go at rearing our own meat birds.
This is a first for me so I am learning from the other three who have some experience of doing this.

We have some land which we fenced ourselves bashing in posts and pinning chicking wire on plus making hen houses etc.

We bought 25 one day old Hubbard chicks which are now 9 wks old and doing really well.

Here they are at one day old.

and here at four wks old.

Here is a pic I took today and they are weighing in at around 4lb 14oz

If anyone is intrested seeing any of the other pictures of us doing the fencing etc I am happy to post them here.

8)  Getting big already, they look healthy and happy. Amazing how quick they grow.

We won't be dispatching ourselves as I don’t think I could do it so we have someone to do it for us and I hope to learn from them dispatch date is early July!

I have had to really work hard on keeping my head strong and not listen to my heart………..I’m just a big softie at heat and I adore my own girls in the garden.

Today we have ordered our next lot of chicks plus we have ordered our turkeys ready for Christmas!

I will post more pictures of the project tomorrow.

What a great idea!  Must admit, six weeks ago it would never have occurred to me to raise chickens for meat, but (bizarrely) the more time I spend round here the more sense it makes to me.  Have never in my life actually killed any animal and am not keen on eating something that I have looked in the eye, but the more I read posts from experienced meat chicken raisers the more I think that it's something I would be prepared to at least explore in the future.

Wish I lived somewhere that would do something like that ... anyone near south west Sheffield want to think about it  :?:  :?:
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

Here are a few pic's of our project.

This is the land before we got started.

Getting all our poles in place.

It's really taking shape now.

Putting together the hen houses.

Home sweet home.

That looks realy impressive.
Very nosey I know - ignore me if you like    ......
How are you funding it? Are you sponsored by someone, or is it purely a private project? Is the land your own or are you renting it from the owner?
How many chooks do you think you will raise before you break even?
Will you be selling your chickens or are they purely for yourselves?
Have you kept chooks before?
You make me keeping three look pretty poultry - pardon the pun

I think you're amazing
Dawn

How are you funding it? ...........................From our own pockets.

Are you sponsored by someone, or is it purely a private project?...........It is purely private project.

Is the land your own or are you renting it from the owner?

We are lucky to have it on permanent loan.

How many chooks do you think you will raise before you break even?

That I don't know the answer to as yet.
Will you be selling your chickens or are they purely for yourselves?

The chickens are for ourselves because we are so fed up with the way poultry is treated.
Have you kept chooks before?

We all have chooks of our own some have hens just for eggs some for pets and some for both so it's a good mixture.
