Just under ripe ordinary ones. Usually the last ones of the season that will not ripen.

Unripe tomatoes.

(Never apologise for asking a question; only stupid people think there is nothing more to learn about gardening!)  :)

Following DD's advice on these pages I'm using banana skins to help ripen my toms etc. it seems to be working, so give it a whirl

You can make fried green tomatoes and there'll be a recipe on here I imagine. If not, you can Google  :)

I'm growing toms just for Green Tom Chutney - we can't get enough.  Its Val's recepie and has been a real success.  I have had requests for Christmas already! :nowink:

I have found Moneymaker is the best tomato for Green Tom Chutney - as they grow loads of toms and don't go red easily.  Perfect! ;)

I have also purposely grown two plants outside knowing they wouldn't ripen so I can use them for chutney. My greenhouse ones are ripening nicely but the same plants outside are weeks behind.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

we love greem tomato dal recipe.
And its a winner. First time in our life we are getting some ripened ones. Its always been green toms in the past years.
I bought a seed called "red alert"  which on the packet said early toms and they are still green.
Probably it meant early for Christmas...  :)

So interested to read this ... my tomatoes aren't ripening (well, only two have, so far) this year - is it a widespread slowness of ripening, all over the country, I mean? And I am going to try a 'fried green tomato' recipe this year (like the film).

Oooh ... have just found green tomato mincemeat recipe on southernfood.com, although they call it 'old fashioned' I'm not sure that I'd think is was 'old-fashioned'. More like 'new' (to me). It looks very nice though ...

we love greem tomato dal recipe.

Can we have it?
split yellow mung bean - 1 cup (boiled to mushy consistensy)
3-4 - green toms chopped
1-2 green chillies - chopped(for fiery) - slit (for medium)
small onion chopped.
grated ginger 1 tsp

for tempering
1/2 tsp mustard
1/2 tsp cumin seeds

oil - 1 tbsp

pour oil in pan and when hot add mustard and mustard will spatter, add cumin after spatter (and optionally if you have add curry leaves - Murraya koenigii).
now add ginger and chilli and toss it once. add onion and cook untill it goes soft. now add green toms and little bit of water and cook untill toms are soft.
Now add cooked mashed mung dal and salt.
add water to lighten it if you need it. The daal should in a consistency of a thick soup.
now taste a little bit. if the toms are not tangy it needs bit more tanginess. add a tsp full of lemon juice otherwise taste the original tanginess of toms.
switch off on the first boil.
afterwards add chopped coriander leaves (optional)

there you go. Green toms dal.
can be taken with rice, naan bread or just as a soup with a roll
