Help - tomatoes still green
« on: August 10, 2009, 08:22 »
Got a good crop but they're just not ripening in the greenhouse. The only thing I've done differently this year is leave the back vents and door open all day as I've been too busy to go up there. But they're getting a good watering every evening. Could it be that they are too cool? I'll try and keep the door shut for a few days. The cucumbers and peppers are doing fine.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

Throw some banana skins in there.

May be co-incidence but mine started turning just after I did that.

This is not folk-lore, but a scientific fact. The ripe skins give off etheylene gas which hastens ripening. Will only help if the fruit are fully formed, but are sitting there doing nothing.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'll give it a go - certainly works with avocados.

Same here - and I am fighting to keep blight at bay so I am desperate for the toms to ripen as I don't like chutney :)  I'll have to go and fish those banana skins off the compost heap.
