As per my diary........

A quick raid on the plot today before the threatened snow arrives.

The last Savoy cabbage (still got quite a few JK's), swede (can't believe this), giant parsnip, sprouts, leeks and unexpectedly - the first haul of purple sprouters, quite a good picking as well!

I also got a tiny harvest of honey berries.  OH bought me 3 and to say they were rooted twigs would be bigging  them up   Anyway they are really putting on some growth this year, so fingers crossed for next year.  As you might of guessed, they went from hand, to under the tap for a rinse, to mouth and never made it home  :D

First tomato  :D  A little cherry tom from the greenhouse.  I have 2 plants in builders buckets at either end of the staging and they are loaded with fruit and flowers.  The bigger toms are setting green fruit, but they have a way to go yet.

I was late sowing all my tomato seed this year, but they seem to be catching up well now.  The ripe one is Cherry Falls - not grown it before but its a nice tangy cherry tomato with lots of flavour, so I'm pleased with it so far  :D

Cherry tomatoes here as well, plus a couple of courgettes, a couple of cucumbers, french beans and summer cabbage.

I usually dry some herbs in the dehydrator this time of year, but it is too hot to have that on, so hung some bunches of oregano and savoury up in the shed to dry.  Its dry and airy, but out of direct sunlight there so we'll see if it works  ;)

Most things a fair bit earlier than usual here due to the weather.

Big strawberry crop started on 11th June, at least a week ahead of usual. Now finished of course.

Yesterday and today....Epicure & Red Duke of York, yellow courgettes, beetroot, turnip, carrots, french beans (about 2 weeks ahead of normal), broad beans, peas and salad leaves. Tomato crop in full swing indoor and out now - latter is very early for here.

All shallots and garlic lifted 2 weeks ago, and red onions yesterday. Need rain badly still. Nothing of any note since mid June and only one day heavy rain then.

Yesterday at the plot I harvested the first 2 sweetcorn cobs  :D  Plus cabbage, courgettes, cucumbers, borlotti beans, Czar runner beans grown for the beans rather than the pods and the first few autumn raspberries.  I also got a carrier bag full of Ferline and Crimsom Crush tomatoes, although I did pick anything showing colour to finish on the windowsill, before they got ruined by the strong winds, rain, hail and heaven knows what else predicted for the weather later on and today.

At home I picked the first Kaberi aubergine and a load of greenhouse tomatoes.

First pick of runner beans and a few autumn raspberries.

Dug a few Kestrel spuds to see how they were doing....excellent uniform size, a couple with scab otherwise fine.

Lots more tomatoes in greenhouse and pots at home.

Gales last night blew peas onto sweetcorn but no lasting damage i think. Also blew sightscreens over at our cricket ground, hoping no lasting damage there either!

Late beetroot and turnip planted last Monday were already germinated and showing well!

My big onions are not so big either and the tops are starting to go, so it looks like that is it  ::)

Yes it was the garlic I ‘found’ on my plot after the winter that I had no idea when I’d planted lol. It certainly wasn’t planted last autumn so must have been last spring, suddenly started to grow really well & produced good sized bulbs that I lifted awhile back before the hot weather when rain was expected as it had finished & appeared quite dry. But hey ho I’ve got some usable bulbs & cloves hopefully

harvested 8 sweetcorn cobs..i cant believe they are ready (and really delicious), although the nibbles from the local vermin normally tell me when its time to get them in 'quick'. some smaller cobs on each plant will hopefully benefit from this recent rain, fingers crossed.  its the first time I have ever seen 2 different ripening stages on the same plant?

obviously more courgettes :D French beans, salad, runner beans and some charlottes. also sungold and tigerella tomatoes with fresh basil made for a lovely bruschetta last night. :)

Popped down the plot last night to pick the polytunnel pumpkin and the only melon that didn't get munched by the ants. Very tasty if a little small.

We discovered that the strange looking squashes that we found growing on the rains of the new plot's compost heap were actually melons   So we came home with 5 small but well formed melons, a big bag of carrots, sweetcorn, raspberries, a couple of apples and the last pear.

Pumpkins today. Plants have started to die off, so all fruit removed and left to ripen/harden for storage. No really big nes this year as planted late, but a good number of medium sized ones to use over the winter.

Potatoes tomorrow!

Yesterday I picked what must be the last bag of tomatoes from the plants on the plot.  I was expecting the worst, but the plants were fine, if a bit tired looking, and laden again. The plot pants have been sooooo productive this year (Ferline and Crimson Crush). A lot of the fruit are green, but I've laid them out on trays to ripen.

Also brought home a cabbage and some Lazy Housewife beans, plus picked a load of Trinidad Perfume peppers from the greenhouse at home, plus the last Lipstick pepper.

I discovered the quinces were ready to drop off the tree yesterday, so got picking quick.  I have already made jelly and have quince brandy on the go, but this lot are still left and a few on the tree still ripening.  Great crop this year  :)

Almost the last of the toms, a few carrots and a small cabbage.

Plot looking a bit bare now with lots of tidying up left - I really must try and grow more things year around :)

Dug up the purple carrots as I noticed the slugs were starting to become very interested in them. Definitely sweeter for having had a frost. Tougher than normal carrots when raw and harder to peel, but the flavour is pretty good.

Mud and leaves   Well it is better than it sounds as the mud came on spuds and the leaves are all fresh homegrown veg for us to eat this week  :D

The spuds are Kifli.  I planted them in spring, they sulked through the drought, started growing in August when the rain arrived and eventually came good.  This lot were from 4 plants and I have more to dig up.

The greens from the left - red cabbage (Kalibos), perpetual spinach and then broccolli raab.

On what might best be described as a 'minging' December afternoon, small red cabbage, baby leeks, swiss chard and carrots which combined with red pepper, mushroom, ginger and home dried chilli, made a very acceptable stir fry to accompany grilled fish and rice.
