I'm asking because I impulse-bought some garlic bulbs at my local gardening centre yesterday.

Ah - see, I read far too much into thinking you were being "clever" and referring to Northern hem as where you are, and jokingly referring to us Jessies as being in the southern hem.
I'm over-thinking this, aren't I :lol:
