Title: New scam around...
Post by: Growster... on October 04, 2023, 07:10
I had an email from my SIL in the US, asking If I used Amazon. As I do occasionally, the next email asked for me to make a purchase for her as her account was in disarray!

All emails came from her own address, but she's never written like that before so I just did a quick check with her family, and yup - it's a scam!

After the DVLA scam, I'm even more wary these days - but I did get my eight quid back from the scammers, so felt OK after a while...

I got an email recently from someone who was asking if I used Amaz0n. Note the spelling as I did and so it got put in the trash bin.

SIL has changed her passwords, and the family are watching out too!

A Daughter here also saw a similar email and binned it!

Every day for the last four days I've answered an automated call from my Bank's Security Department advising me I've spent another £300 at Amazon, and £1,100 on an International Bank money transfer.  Paul got one at work yesterday and rang our Bank Manager who we've known for years, went to his wedding etc., and Paul gave him the number the call came from as he had done 1471.  Darren said, 'don't bother, we won't'.

You can report the number the call came from to a fraud department but can't remember the number now. I did that once and was gratefully thanked.

I had an email invitation to pay my TV licence today.
Unfortunately I had checked my bank statement and seen a payment for it already.
You need to stay alert these days I’m afraid.

Here's a new one!

I have three email accounts, but only ever use one for outgoing stuff - the others are used for blogging etc.

I very rarely look at the latter two, but just last night, by coincidence, (fiddling around with an iPad), I saw an odd email from the US Social Security Administration, telling me that my social number and email address on one of the 'spare' accounts was being used for illegal actions, and I was being suspended!

Funny that - the last time I looked, I don't have a  US 'social number', I live in Kent, England, I actually exist on our British pensions with Mrs Growster, and as far as I can recall, have never spent any money in the US except on holiday - paid for in English Pounds nearly thirty years ago!

I wish they'd keep up...;0)
