B****** fox or rat got the 2 polish chucks
« on: January 13, 2008, 12:02 »
I am devestated poor little Crunchie and Twirl copped it last night, the nest box lid had come open maybe the wind lifting it caused the catch to flip.  We have severe gales here.

I have a box of feathers and no more chickens, I only took her photo yesterday looking so happy bless her she was such a friendly little thing.

I don't know if it was a fox or rats there were only black feathers from Twirl no sign of brown feathers from crunchie

Fox, not rats ! I've had chicken killed by rats and they have always eaten in situ, usually leaving half a carcass.
Sorry to hear of your bad news.

Oh Sandra, I'm so sorry, it's something that we all dread.

Our nest box has a flippy-up lid but we put a great big rock on top of it to prevent the winds flipping it up (we get terrible gales here sometimes)

So sorry about your poor hens.  B*****d B****y fox.  We've got a heavy hook to hold our nest box lid down; its a bit of a faff sometimes but I sleep easy.

Sorry to hear that it must be horrible to find them.

Please don't shout at me for being a townie - but if you leave food out for foxes do they still kill, is it just their instinct, like cats, that kill even though they're not hungry, just because it's what they do?  I just wondered as some townies leave food out for foxes, not me I hasten to add, I'd hate for them to get my geriatric cat.

The big house is ok I hope, it has 2 doors to get through both bolt at night and concreted wire and mesh in the ground all round the run and then again inside the main house.

This little house was seperate from the rest as the Polish had to have their own house to protect them from the others.  The nestbox flap had a hook on it which was quite tight but with the wind was pulling it up and down it must have worked open.  If I ever use it for other birds I will get a hasp and clasp and padlock it so it cant open again.

I am upset as their welfare is my priority and I never do anything till they are all safetly put away at night.  I won't even make plans to go out if I can't be home at dusk to lock them away

I have been finding bodies so the rat poison is working, I will keep leaving it till I find some left in the traps, they are cleaning them out every night still so I must have a few.  Once it stops I will just top them up weekly to stop them getting a hold again.  It was a major problem as the old people here before us were nearly house bound so the garden was wild and neglected.

I think town foxes are a bit different to country but they all seem to kill in a frenzy till nothing is left moving.  They are opportunists and one mistake/opportunity is all they need to get in and cause havoc.   :x

I don't blame myself as I know it was closed but I do blame the design as it didn't work as it should have.  I will never trust a catch again I will put something much more robust and heavy duty on to hopefully prevent it happening again.

Failing that I am going to get some landmines to blow the b**g**rs up

yes something very large a cannon will do.

I bet she was such a soft target as when she was scared she just played dead.

I have saved her from a cold and 2 bullying hens, cuddled her to get her warm and molly coddled her right the way along.  To be lost to a fox is just such a waste
