Electric fence
« on: May 14, 2011, 00:10 »
Hope someone has a good suggestion. I want to give the hens as much ranging room as possible by putting the electric fence close to the chainlink fence round the garden. But this would allow Mr Fox to climb the chainlink fence and jump the electric fence. Any ideas how I could stop M Fox doing this.

If you get one with a decent power out put you should be able to loop it both sides of the fence assuming you own the fence?
I hate signatures but love irony

or use a mesh electric net well inside the chain link fence (so it doesnt arc).  It can be useful to have a smaller area and then move the fence when the grass needs to re-grow rather than allow them on the full area all of the time- just off to move our fence now as it happens!
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

You could erect an electrifiedfstrand at the top of the chain link but you would need to ensure it was insulated against the chain link :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Thanks for the comments. That a good idea Sassy. I'll screw some wood onto the fence posts to extend them and fix the electric tape to them.
Will it be all right to connect the tape to the electric net for the power?

I'm not an expert on this but you can try it and see if you get a pulse. If not someone on here will know the answer or phone a supplier.

If you screw the wood at a 45 degree angle pointing out away from your run that will be more effective. You cannot attach the electric tape directly to the wood it will drain the electricity and reduce the efficiency of your net. You need to either buy insulators or I have seen thick plastic used between the tape and the wood. :)
