Title: Which electric fence...?
Post by: Farmer Woosnip on May 25, 2011, 14:33
This one:

Or this one:

Also, there are quite tall hedges around where the chickens will be.
How far away from the hedge does the fence need to be to stop foxy climbing the hedge and doing a flying jump over the expensive electric fence?

I bought from smallholdershop, quick delivery and they were helpful via email answering my pre-purchase questions.

Yes I like the fact that the smallerholder shop fence is a bit taller, I don't really want foxy taking a run up and clearing it in one go.

You had any fox issues since you got the fence?

4 inches (10 cm) difference in the height? Negligable.... Rutland is an extremely good brand, I couldn't see where Kintaline get their fencing from, but they are an everything centre (garden, chickens et al) not so far from me, so I don't expect they have enough call to make it themselves.

No issues, touch wood.

If I remember rightly it is dispatched directly from the manufacturer/supplier.  Can't remember who that was, think I did a search and you couldn't buy from them directly.

Is it the same as this one by any chance?

Hm, Rutland is not a retailer and you have to go through a supplier (like my place of work ::) or Kintaline) for their kit. It could be last year's model being advertised on Kintaline's website, or perhaps they supply Hotline who also don't sell direct to the public....

That's Hotline's version. :)

So you work for a business that sells this stuff?

Among other agriculture related products, yes. :)

It is unlikely this would happen as the fox would investigate first and get his nose stung! There are some on here who would advocate baiting the fence to encourage any foxes to get zapped, thereby putting them off.

Thats the one.  We did order loads more posts though as we have an uneven and odd shaped enclosure.  Was going to order the corner posts which are stiffer but we are going to do what hillfooter did with his, (put wooden corner posts and attach as long as it is insulated).  It was in this post but we haven't go round to that yet.

Hoping to move house this year so we are putting it off for now.

Ok thanks for all the previous help, fence is up and running now and seems to be working well.... so next question....

At the moment it's being powered by a big caravan battery but I want to run it off the mains. (It's a dual power energiser thingy)

I called a supplier to order the mains cable (Called "lead out cable") and he told me that because of the distance it's not a good idea.

I would need about 90m of cable from the house down to the fence.

Does anyone know if that's correct? Is that too far run a cable?

Surely plenty of people keep chickens much further away from a mains supply than that?

Due to electrical issues, 90m is a very very long way.

So why are they selling 100m rolls of cable?

Surely 90m is a tiny tiny bit of land compared to some?

What's the solution then, is everyone just running their fences off caravan batteries?

I know alot of people run their fences off of marine batteries
Title: Re: Which electric fence...?

Actually that's what it is, marine battery - caravan battery, almost the same thing I think?

What I'm concerned about though is somebody stealing the battery and the energiser. Marine batteries are good scrap value and round here they would take the energiser too even if they didn't know what it was.

It seems a bit ridiculous to start having to protect the protective fence....

Might be that you have to have armoured cable as the other cable might overheat.  Not sure but think our electrician mentioned something like that when we were running cable to our garage.  Either that or there will be some law or other, health and safety issues!

Farmer Woosnip, that'll be a leisure battery you're using at the moment, just to that you know the correct search term to look up. ;) You'll find a lot of voltage drop on a run as long as 90 metres. You can look that up too and read about it.

I bought poultry netting with solar panel charging a battery off ebay.  Someone living in France but putting it on the ebay UK site thinking more people in UK would be interested,  Got it for under £100 and it is brilliant - I would ass thought that you will need extra poles to those supplied , we have used metal poles with the pig tail type connectors this year which seem  to work well if you wan tot keep moving it.

I have had no fox problems since the electric fence.  I let them completely free range if I am outside all day and the dog has free range too, otherwise they are behind the wire.
