???Gav

What are you going to do with the pipes and your leeks?

Sorry it was just a joke - I was driving in Manchester and saw these huge pipes on a building site... so I took a pic with my phone as a joke..

Nice one! That 'l teach me to look at the bigger picture as they say in future!! I thought you might be doing some sort of Medwyn Williams trick for growing show leeks. :tongue2:

Ok New Lottie Gardener here and new to this Forum.

First "proper" weekend on our "starter plot" and boy have we ever been busy. Yesterday was spent going to collect a shed that we managed to get for the bargain £25, only about a year old 6x4. Take that back to the lottie tear down the old dilapidated shed and then put the new one up in a slightly differrent location. This gave us some more area to cultivate which we spent today "double digging" (I think) to incorporate manure and then spread manure over about a third of the remaining area. Then we also dug a bean trench to start filling with compost.

Boy are we shattered now though.

[Good feeling though isnt it? - I cant wait for this snow to go and the weather to warm enough to dig all the manure into the beds ready for planting. ]

Absolutely, yesterday was a great feeling after waiting for the plot then,as it had been rotavated before we took over, not being able to do lot, we finally had the feeling of geting going! Huge sense of achievement as well. Just cant wait for the crops to arrive!

I suppose they stand a chance if they had not commenced germination, after all, in nature they would lie dormant through frosts.

However, if they'd started to sprout in the soil and then got frozen, they'll be a gonner probably.

I know what I'd do. (One of the being not starting peas inside!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Set them all up now.

Plant them all at the same time. Whilst maincrop mature later, they need a longer growing season, so don't need planting later just because they mature later.

There are some schools of thought that say to plant maincrop first.

The main reason for chitting is to break dormancy, the main reason for planting earlies first (in my opinion) is to get those "new" spuds ASAP, but keep in mind those possible late frosts.

You do chit them the same time. Some even plant at the same time. They do not grow at the same speed. :D
