Just returned after removing old wood and tying in new growth on Blackberries and Loganberries, what a job! so much new growth this year. This evening will be spent removing many thorns from my hands: But they are worth it.

Not on the plot but:

Three hours of fun(?) "trimming" a winter jasmine that my mother planted years ago by the front door of their bungalow. It had grown up and under the guttering and all around the porch too. Cut back and down to a foot in height I'm sure the blessed thing will shoot again.

Now we can see the front door, wall and even the side window. Tomorrow I have a great deal of shredding to do having brought the lot back home to their new place.

Fortunately my mother's habit of sticking in cuttings of anything she can lay her hands on is no longer quite so common place...but she has carnations rooting in a glass.

Ripped up all the tomato plants that had succumbed to blight and bagged up.

Mowed the grass and put on the long term compost heap.

Tied in more fruit canes from the loganberry, boysenberry tayberry and blackberry plants.

OH and myself spent 4 hours at the plot yesterday.  Dug up two rows of spuds - despite the fact they got blight I got a great result - 4 sacks from two 10 ft long double rows, some were big enough to use as bakers. :)

Beefsteak tomatoes have finally started to ripen (delicious) - came home with a basket load. :D

Dahlia's, sweetpea and Glads all doing brilliantly - vase loads of flowers around the house making me smile every time I look at them, even if veg didn't do well this year the cut flowers have certainly made up for them. :D :D

We made up two more raised beds and filled them with compost - going to have to try lasagne beds as I couldn't afford a tonne of compost/soil that each bed is taking.

Squished zillions of catapillars (makes a change from slugs I suppose!!!)

Quick trip for me too....

  • Dug a row of potatoes - pleasantly surprised as, although late in, this lot gave a good return. Earlier planted rows have been unusually disappointing.
  • Picked FB and runners and gave them a much needed drink
  • Pulled beetroot and cut lettuce
  • Made a very quick cuppa tea...must take some dried milk next time
  • Hoed and watered the leeks praying that the leek moth hasn't spotted them again this year
Now home to relax for an hour before getting organised - Sunday dinner to cook as usual.

Hope your day on the plot was a good one.  :)

Thanks for the thought there Paul -- a productive day for us

  • picked a large bowlful of raspberries and take-away container of blackberries (now safely in the freezer)
  • harvested the white kidney beans and borlotti beans as pods dry and crispy - now having an extra dry on plates indoors just in case any were even a tiny bit damp
  • harvested early leeks, lettuce, masses of tomatoes, cucumber, couple of courgettes and a Golden Acre cabbage, plus a bunch of dahlias and some calendula
  • cleared the ground where the borlottis had been, FBB and stamped it down, then planted spring cabbages (Frostie and Spring Hero) and a few caulis for April/May, plus some late PSB broccoli. Put nets over them and slug baited too
  • trimmed the outside leaves off the rather small looking celeriacs
  • watered the mildewed courgette plants and our very  prolific dudhi squashes that live in the compost bin

and then ate lunch and had a hot drink, before setting off home  :D

FINALLY completed digging over the potato patch. Given that this was the first year this Lottie has been cultivated properly for at least 7 years it's been around 24 hours over several weekends of bindweed removal with the occasional potato crop (sown after a fairly rough clear out in spring), and we had blight galore, I AM grateful for the 5 sacks or so of spuds we've ended up with. AND I'll appreciate next year that we'll have a much less weedy plot. But I swear at one point I thought it would never end...

Really cant believe how weed free the plot has been this year so been up and really wasnt much to do but i:

scraped off any weeds starting to grow on the paths (even these are weed free this year!!)
planted some really large french beans i should have put in ages ago
planted some more lettuces (again should have been in ages ago!)
Took some spent compost from flower pots at home and threw over a few beds at the allotment

Weed-free? Hell's teeth you're lucky. The weeds on my plot have loved the constant rain and cooler temperatures. Best year ever for chickweed.

I'm almost over the "tears" stage but it hasn't been easy this year with a constant lack of time to visit.  :(
