JOSTABERRY HELP
« on: July 27, 2009, 19:26 »
Have just finished picking the Jostaberries: got a good crop, and they really are delicious  :tongue2:
And even better, they have no thorns  :)
BUT the bushes are only 3 or 4 years old, and theyre getting very big.
How am I supposed to prune them? Up to now Ive just been shortening new growth, to contain them, but the more I cut, the more they grow.
Any ideas?
Anyone else grow them?

Thanks Mikem: thats what I call RAPID service  :) :) :) :)
Yes, the Telegraph says they make very large bushes. Its not that space is the problem, its getting into them to pick the berries.
Im going to give my old gooseberry bushes the heave-ho this Autumn: fed up with the spines  >:(
Thanks again

I have a couple of elderly josta berries on my new plot.  They are about 7ft tall.  I will remove one this winter and takes some cuttings and remove the other one next year.  They have been uncared for for some years and are very woody and poorly cropping. (the pigeons stripped them anyway) so I don't know what they are like..

Well Aunty, theyre a cross between Blackcurrant and Gberry, so if you can imagine a cross between Blackcurrant and Gberry, then thats exacly what they taste like  :D
Seriously though, theyre not quite as good as blackcurrants (thats not possible  ;) ), not so tangy, but make a nice dessert when really ripe. And easy to pick. I'm fed up with my gooseberries: too much hassle for mediocre fruit (sorry if I upset any Gberry fans).
I used my first prunings as cuttings, about3 - 4 years ago, and theyre only starting to fruit now, so I'd try rejuvenating your bushes before you ditch them. They dont seem very fussy about hard pruning.
I actually bought them by mistake (thought they were Bcurrants), but glad Ive got them now.
Maybe its your neighbour stripping the berries  ::)
