Can you make it with smoked mackeral given that smoked haddock is so dear?

mackeral is quite a bit oilier than haddock and IMO goes too slimy when served hot.  Smoked ling or cod should do the trick though.

When I used to eat fish, I used to make my fish pie with the cheapest tin of fish in the shop (normally sild or pilchards) and mix it in with a bit of tuna,  a layer of baked beans, layer of mash, then cheese on top.
