So what happens next?
« on: February 19, 2012, 19:31 »
Hope I can get some advice please - we are still new to this allotment lark

I planted Garlic, Broad beans, shallots and onion sets in Sept/Oct last year.

They have all grown over the last few months (they didnt like the snow!) but now what do I do?

Should I be doing anything to them yet?  I think they have months to go before I can harvest but I would feel better about it all with a few wise words from those that know!

Cheers  :)

Hi brightgirls
Just keep them weed free and provide support for the broad beans if they get too tall. Other than that just wait until they are ready to harvest. Assuming the onions are an overwintering type they will be ready May / June and the shallots and garlic a little later in the year. Broad beans should be ready in May / June also. A little bit of feed raked in around the plants will give them a boost. Remember overwintering onions don't keep so use them as soon as they come ready.

yeh as MOS says leave them, however i think i should let you know in advance that overwintered onions dont store very well once pulled, so i would advice you when that you pull them when needed - they will stop growing around june/july so they've still got alot of growing to do!

thanks matt.

I am a bit confused by this comment matt

Autumn planted onions are ready around June, and store though to the autumn perfectly well.

Spring planted onions are ready around August, and will last right through the winter in storage.

Hope that helps, brightgirls, and as MoS says ---watch them  grow  ;)

Sunny has got it spot on.

To save any confusion - she's the one to listen to.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Re : garlic

If you're not organic, the instructions that came with some garlic that I received did mention that by February the garlic would benefit from an application of sulphate of potash (3oz/sq yd).

This I've done for the first time so whether it will produce a noticeable difference I don't know.
It's a hard neck variety, whether you would treat soft neck varieties the same I'm not sure.

And as said before, keep the alliums as weed free as possible, they don't like competition. I found out the hard way once.
In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.
