Debris netting
« on: August 25, 2012, 12:06 »
I want to build a brassica net tunnel as I hate picking caterpillars off and don't spray my veg. I have read on here that debris netting is cheaper then Enviromesh. Where do you get yours, and do you use alkathene piping for the structure - if so, can you get it in another colour?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

EBay for the net, fifteen quid for 3 x 5 metres.  Supported on canes, very simple.  I hope it lasts.

if so, can you get it in another colour?

BS 6572 : 1985
Blue polyethylene pipes up to nominal size 63mm for below ground use
for potable water

BS 6730 : 1986
Black polyethylene pipes up to nominal size 63mm for above ground
use for cold potable water.

Blue is not actually UV stabilised.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

MDPE is available from many builders, plumbing or agricultural merchant type outlets and it is available in black as well as blue.

Black is less common as it is intended for above ground water carriage where blue is for underground. You also get yellow pipe, used to transport gas. In case you wondered, this isn't all useless information, it should help to guide to the right kind of outlet. :)

The netting lasts for ages. I put mine in the bath with cold water at end of season - drain it - dry it off on the line and its as good as new for next season. Keeps butterflys off !!

Try your local buiding site for the pipe, they usually have load's of offcuts that go in the skip. Scaffold yard's also have load's of 2nd hand debris netting to get rid of. If you try e-bay 100mts x 2mts debris net is about £30. Go for the black, it is much better on the eye.

pvc electrical conduit is great for forming a tunnel,it comes in two and three metre lengths, have a look on the" Screwfix"web site.I fix the "hoops" into lengths of tile lathes already tanilised ,after drilling 20 mm holes in them, I think it will work out cheaper too.
