Debris netting - again...?
« on: September 04, 2011, 18:25 »
DD said a couple of years ago, that this netting was possibly good enough to keep out carrot fly.

Did anyone come back to you on this DD? I've managed to acquire a big swathe of the stuff which is nearly new, and I'm looking at ways to use it.

We've got about three stretches, 25 yds x 3 yds wide.

A neighbour has built a 2' high barrier which encloses about 80 s.f of ground, and nearly all his carrots have survived so far. I can either do something like that, or cover them and tuck them in - rather like we used to do the kids...

I don't know the specific answer but you'd need to take care with the holes along the sides if you sew two lengths together to widen it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi Growster,

I tried debris netting last year and still got carrot fly.
I usually keep them under fleece all year, but tried one lot under debris netting next to some others under fleece.
The ones under fleece had no fly damage at all, so I have gone back to that method again this year.
In my opinion, debris netting is fantastic for brassicas, but no good for carrots  :)
Cheers, Comfortably Numb.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................

This is good advice, Comfort and Yorkie - thankyou.

We came across this load of net by accident, and as I've had a big bag of the stuff in the shed for years, another load was too good to miss!

In the past, we've used it when frost glowered over the plot!

My neighbour's carrots still seem pretty good, so it may well be an option,
